Editorial, the main article in a newspaper


Editorial is an opinion article which usually can be found in newspaper, tabloid, or magazine. Opinion in editorial contains the aspiration, premise, and certain attitude of a pres media for potential, phenomenal, and actual problem occurred in a society (Sumadiria, 2005: 81).
Opinion in editorial also represents as formal perception from the pres media. Aspiration in editorial is not individually aspiration from editor in media but it belongs to the whole media workers or institution. Assegaf in (Sumadiria, 2005: 83) states that editorial brings opinion from editors and the modal owners which support the media. Editorial is written by chief editor or executive editor which knows news polices or political redaction of the media.

William Pinkerton (as quoted by Rivers, 1994: 23 in Sumadiria, 200:  83) explained that the functions of editorial are:
1.      Explaining the news
Editorial explains important events for readers. Editorial likes a teacher who explains how an event happened.
2.      Filling in background
For continuing an important event, editorial can describe the event by historical background.
3.      Forecasting the future
An editorial sometime serves an analysis which crosses to day event in order to able to predict future.
4.      Passing moral judgment
Editorial should tell the truth and the fault to the reader. Editorial should struggle for keeping the fault and against the evil.
There are several kinds of editorial: informative editorial, descriptive editorial, argumentative editorial, provocative editorial, and persuasive editorial.
Topic in editorial has several criterions. First, the topic should be actual and controversial and it is important for public. Second, the topic should be suitable with the philosophy, vision, and mission of a media. Third, editorial’s topic must be appropriate with qualification of the reader. Fourth, topic of an editorial must concern with the journalistic standard. Fifth, the topic does not contradict with ideological, sociological, and ethic aspect in a society or nation. The last, the topic should have orientation for universal value (Sumadiria, 2005: 93-94).
The Jakarta Post is a daily English language newspaper in Indonesia. With an average circulation of around 50,000 copies, it is the largest English language newspaper in Indonesia. The paper is owned by PT Bina Media Tenggara, and the head office is in the nation's capital, Jakarta. The newspaper was launched on 25 April 1983.[1]
The Jakarta Post is a small but influential newspaper oriented towards local English-speaking expatriates and the diplomatic community. In many ways, it acts as an unofficial mouthpiece of the Indonesian government into the international community.
The newspaper is owned by a consortium of competing Indonesian-language newspaper companies. Shareholders include Gramedia (owners of Kompas, by far Indonesia's biggest newspaper), Tempo, Suara Karya (a newspaper with close links with the former governing Golkar Party) and Sinar Harapan. Twenty percent of equity is now provided as a collective share for all non-foreign employees of the newspaper.
The history of the Post dates back to a conversation in mid-1982, between then-minister for information Ali Moertopo and Mr. Jusuf Wanandi, who represented the government-backed Golkar newspaper Suara Karya. Minister Moertopo suggested the possibility of publishing an English-language newspaper that would be able to provide an Indonesian perspective to counter what he perceived to be "highly unbalanced" Western-dominated news and views.

Ellipsis in Discourse Analysis

The essential characteristic of ellipsis is something that is present in the selection of underlying (systematic) option that omitted in the structure. According to Halliday and Hasan (1976: 143), ellipsis can be regarded as substitution by zero. It is divided into three kinds, namely nominal ellipsis, verbal ellipsis, and clausal ellipsis. 1)         Nominal Ellipsis Nominal ellipsis means the ellipsis within the nominal group or the common noun that may be omitted and the function of head taken on by one of other elements (deictic, numerative, epithet or classifier). The deictic is normally a determiner, the numerative is a numeral or other quantifier, the epithet is an adjective and the classifier is a noun. According to Hassan and Halliday, this is more frequently a deictic or a numeral than epithet or classifier. The most characteristic instances of ellipsis, therefore are those with deictic or numerative as head.

Lexical Cohesion in Discourse Analysis

Lexical Cohesion Lexical cohesion comes about through the selection of items that are related in some way to those that have gone before (Halliday, 1985: 310). Types of lexical cohesion are repetition, synonymy and collocation. Furthermore, Halliday and Hasan (1976: 288) divide types of lexical cohesion into reiteration (repetition, synonymy or near-synonym, superordinate and general word) and collocation.

Substitution: A Grammatical Cohesion

Grammatical Cohesion According to Halliday and Hasan (1976: 4), cohesion occurs when the interpretation of some elements in the discourse is dependent on that of another. It concludes that the one element presupposes the other. The element cannot be effectively decoded except by recourse to it. Moreover, the basic concept of it is a semantic one. It refers to relations of meaning that exists within the text. So, when this happens, a relation of cohesion is set up, and the two elements, the presupposing and the presupposed, are thereby integrated into a text. Halliday and Hasan (1976: 39) classify grammatical cohesion into reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction.
